Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Harold Arlen are just a few of the names that stand strong as the great songwriters of the jazz era. The pieces that later became known as “popular standards,” include many hundreds of works, all composed in the early to middle 1900s. These songs exemplify the craft of songwriting at its best, with meaningful and dynamic lyrics, playful rhythms, engaging chord structures and soring melodies.
It’s worth noting that most of the popular standards were love songs – whether comedy or tragedy. While the words and music seem to written for all of us, somehow the music speaks personally to everyone. You won’t want to miss this performance of some of the great Jazz classics with this trio of wonderful music makers.
