The Weeks Act and the White Mountains
June 1, 2017Taylor Resident Vincent Lunetta will tell the story of the Weeks Act – so visible in New Hampshire’s beautiful White Mountains – Monday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Taylor’s Woodside Building. The event is free and open to the public. Historical and contemporary photos as well as video clips from the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) will be shown.
The Weeks Act of 1911 was named for John Wingate Weeks, born in Lancaster. Initially, the Act had been contentious federal legislation that ultimately enabled the protection and wise management of what is now the nearly 800,000 acres of the WMNF. The legislation of this act enabled the creation of 41 eastern National Forests that now protect and manage more than 20 million acres in 24 states.
